Piano, too?

With the end of the year quickly approaching we had both our end of the year celebration, and a piano recital for the students who have been taking classes with Bruce Howard. Mr. Howard has been teaching classes for the past several months at the center. The parents brought the food, the students had a blast and we look forward to getting back to work in the new year.

Blazer Breakfast

Well for all of those who were unable to make it, we wanted to send you a big....."you missed it!!" The Blazer breakfast was a success. We had Blazer's show up from the 1st team in 1969 through some of our most recent teams. The Kitchen Divas were in full effect and cooked a fantastic meal for the breakfast on Sunday. We had eggs, fruit smoothies, potatoes, oatmeal, fruit, turkey sausage.....it was delicious!!! We plan on having another get together in the next few months. If you didnt get an invite, be sure and email us so we have your contact information.

The Salsa Class

The Blazers Learning Center now has a new class for adults to enjoy. Observe these six students as they watch carefully the steps of their instructor Rene. First, they learn the positions of their feet and slowly practice these movements. Rene has a one-on-one session with each student, which allows them to become comfortable with the movements. Then the excitement is just about to begin. The students can apply their steps to the rhythm of salsa.

Parents and students are decorating the Blazers Learning Center with spider webs, floating ghosts, and skeletons escaping from their graves. The groundwork decorations are for the upcoming Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st. Everyone will be wearing their spookiest and most frightening costumes.

Susan with the children

Blazer Learning Center offers free tutoring to our children. Children come to the Blazers if they have any questions with their homework or if they want to improve in any other area. Susan (out tutor) has been volunteering at Blazer's for over a year she is really commited to helping the students. Susan comes every Wednesday from 4-6p.m. Ivonie thinks that Susan is one of the best tutors she has had.

Parent Meeting

The parent meeting here at the Blazers went pretty good this past tuesday, September 23rd. We were able to discuss things among each other and most importantly get feedback from the parents. We discussed each afterschool program, as well as the new ones that will be offered, upcoming events, recent events and trips we have attended, and ideas as to what the students should plant for the Healthy Lifestyles class today. It was unfortunate that some parents weren't able to make it due to the fact that it was Open House at some of our students schools. But on a much brighter note, the new students and parents attended the meeting and were enthusiastic about being in the program, as well as learning more about it. So far the week has been pretty busy enrolling new students and parents and making sure that everything runs smoothly at the center, but we hope that the parents continue to take part in their children's activities and studies by bringing them to the Blazers and attending our parent meetings.

Story Telling with the Children's Librarian

Meeting Diane (the Children's Librarian) was a really fun experience for the kids =). Diane was really sweet and patient with the kids. The children were really excited to go to the library but most important to see the brand NEW library. She readed a short funny story callled "I'd like to eat a child".

After, story telling we got a tour around the library. The kids got super excited about checking out books. Eight out of the thirteen students we took didn't have a library card =0 but now they do =D! Each child checked out from 2 to 3 books each. What was shocking =o was that Brandon one of our children checked out 7 books to read.

Gone Fishing.

This picture here was taken over at Jenks Lake. It was a very long two hour drive to get to San Bernandino, but it was worth it. The scenery was beautiful. The people there were very friendly and wouldn't hesitate to help you. The Blazers got to meet Smokey the bear. I had many mishaps throughout the day, it took me a while to learn how to cast the line, and instead of hooking fish I would end up hooking my hand. It was quite painful, who would've ever thought such a small hook was very dangerous. I was really happy when I caught a fish, but unfortunately it got away. During lunch everyone got to chat among themselves and talk about how the day was going for them so far. By the end of the day, we were all gathered with the park rangers and those who caught fish were given an award. One of the students here at the Blazers won the price for heaviest fish, which weighed 9 oz. Before leaving, everyone got goodie bags and then it was another long drive home. It was quite funny because almost everyone fell asleep and I took the liberty of taking embarrassing pictures. Overall, the day was fun. I'm looking forward to the next fishing trip next year. Hopefully next time around, my fish won't get away.

First time surfing.

The surfing trip the Blazer Learning took place at Zuma Beach on August 9th. It was the first time many of us went surfing. It was a bit of a struggle getting the wetsuit on, the parents of other students were helping everyone put them on. Jeff was our teacher for the day and told us that the first lesson is always on land. We had to learn everything from holding the surf board, to paddling, and when to catch a wave. But once we got in the water, it was a whole different story. Our lesson turned out to be much easier said than done. The waves would push our surf boards away and ocassionally dragged us with them too... It was a bit embarrassing falling everytime I tried to stand on the surf board because I'd fall all the time. Later on in the day, a couple of dolphins were swimming with us. I personally decided to get out of the water and observe from a distance just to be safe. Once the day was about to end, many of us didn't want to leave. I love the beach so I wanted to stay there longer. It was fun for my first time surfing. I'd definetly want to try it again, and I recommend it to those who haven't tried it.

P.S.

Word of warning:

If it's your first time surfing, chances are that you'll
be sore for a couple of days. I know I was.

Standing Up!!!

Riding a wave is harder than we thought it was. First, we have to learn how to approach the wave by swimming towards the wave (look at David in blue he is the one right side) pretending to swim to the wave. Next, we had to lay down and quickly rise into a standing position with your legs bent.

Hot !! Hot !! Hot !!

We also had bell peppers and jalapenos as well. We have some peppers growing in front. They are starting out green and then turning red....Is this something all peppers do, or is this a different type of pepper. ?..And just to be sure the peppers were hot enough, we had a student try them out..!!!...We still have some growing, and there really hasn't been a mad rush, for them, like the onions and tomatoes....I wonder......are our peppers sooooo hot that folks are scared......hmmmmmm..?.......

Homegrown

Oops!!!....I almost forgot.....I have to brag about our gardens, for those of you who are not aware, we grow the best (my personal opinion) fruits and vegetables on site. This year we planted peppers, onions, tomatoes and corn to go with apples, plums, peaches and strawberries.....Here are a couple of pics of our local gardeners and the bounty....

A day at the blazers

[Below Mr. Curl teaching photo class]

Being at the blazers is fun, there are many things you can do.For example, they have computer classes were you can learn how to type or just have fun, they also have photography classes and digital video classes(these three are my favorite classes). Its fun being at the blazers because, you are treated like at home (which is awesome). The teachers are cool, they treat you like family, and I would say that you would want to come to the blazers. Coming here everyday is fun.

"Creative stuff we do"

We do art, digital video, tennis, and homework Let me tell you how we do art. Our teachers have ideas allways four us to do. For our week we had fun on that week and on this day we had water day.And here is a quote, "everyday there is a day of learning at the blazers"
